How Methanex built an AI agent to turn alarms into reports in minutes

For the last several years, the chemicals industry has been stymied by what many have come to call the “trilemma”: an overcapacity of basic chemicals, declining production volume, and rising power and raw materials costs. Deloitte projects a 0.2% contraction in overall production volumes for the sector. [1] Many industry plants today are just not producing to capacity.

But the “trilemma”—complex as it may be—can be solved. In chemicals, the fastest lever is execution: fewer upsets, less wasted energy, and less time lost between an alarm and a confident next step. AI becomes valuable when it shortens that gap—by pulling the relevant history, constraints, and documentation into a usable narrative teams can act on. Methanex, the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol, is one chemicals company leading the way.

From AI chatbot to AI first responder

When an alarm fires in a Methanex plant, it used to be humans who had to undertake a review of what happened. But what used to take hours now takes minutes. An AI agent responds to the event and within ten minutes (and in as little as two) creates a report that it then disseminates to the interested parties.

Where many companies are still in the trial stages of integrating artificial intelligence into their operations, Methanex has already launched a LLM trained with the company’s domain-specific data. Using CONNECT, the company has created a system of chatbots trained on nonstructured data (such as standards) as well as structured AVEVA PI System data. Methanex then assembled these chatbots as tools underneath multi-tool AI agents. These agents draw on the chatbots not only to answer questions from teams and field operators using controlled documents, operational data, and other sources, but also provide prompts to operators and teams when certain event frames occur.

Methanex is now benefiting from the increased efficiency of delivering productive reports to users that result from certain patterns in operations. With the data delivered to them through CONNECT, teams are able to make informed decisions faster than ever before and minimize search work. And the increased speed means reduced risk of downtime. Now senior engineers have to spend less time reacting to problems and can spend more time thinking about how to plan for and innovate in the future.
